Right here here here. Legend has it that Bond Street in Noho received its name in a twist of whimsy. In the early 18th century a famous banker named Samuel Ward lived in a palatial mansion on the corner of Broadway and an unnamed side street. Why not give the street a name that recalled the profession of a banker, thought Samuel Jones, a local lawyer involved in many lawsuits who had named Great Jones Street after himself? So Bond Street was named after a certifier of debt and soon became home to New York's wealthiest merchants and entrepreneurs who built Neo-Renaissance and Roman-style mansions along its banks. Many of these buildings are still there. Their spacious interiors were converted into offices when the area became a lighting manufacturing district in the late 19th century. Still quite majestic in proportion Bond is today the quintessential downtown of the underrated art of theater fashion and food. Sophocles and Ibsen are at home here (among other readings in the Jean Cocteau Repertory program on stage at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre). The headquarters of Bond No.9 perfumeries is located here. The Gene Frankel Theater also has a home on Bond along with Selima Paul & Joe as does Il Buco (Tuscan farmhouse food) and the highly sought after Bond Street sushi den.
